Desktop Computers: Four Types According to Architecture

Size and mobility are always an issue with desktop computers. These bulky PCs will always occupy a fair amount of space on your desk — which is why they are called desktops. There are, however, desktop computers that are smaller than others. Each has its pros and cons. According to architecture, desktop computers may be classified into four general types: small form factor computers, all-in-one computers, standard mid-sized computers, and tower computers.

* Small Form Factor (SFF) Computers

Small form factor computers are very portable desktops that range between a third and one-half the size of normal computer cases. Because of their small size, they can only accommodate a limited number of components. If you are contemplating on getting a small form factor, carefully consider which components you want to have. You may not be able to fit everything you want inside the small casing. The connectivity options of SFFs are also limited due to their size.

Most small form factors are barebone PCs that include a built-in motherboard, graphics card, and sound card. You can still attach a separate graphics card or sound card to your SFF at the cost of space.

* All-in-One Computers

Unlike the other computer types which need to be connected to an external monitor, all-in-one computers include an integrated LCD monitor. As such, these computers look like flat-screen televisions. The computer components are crammed and hidden behind the LCD screen. Because of limited space, all-in-one computer owners, like small form factor computer owners, have few upgrade and connectivity options. There are only so many components that can fit in a small box.

All-in-one computers are real space savers. Because you no longer need to connect your computer to an external monitor, you can clear up more space on your computer table and keep your desk neat and clutter-free.

* Standard Mid-Sized Computers

Standard computers are the most popular type of desktop computers at the moment. They are the regular-sized computers that you see everyday. Because space is not an issue, standard computers do not need any high-priced special components like SFFs and all-in-ones. Standard computer owners have a lot of room on which hardware to use and how many.

* Tower PCs

Tower PCs are designed for multimedia professionals and hardcore PC gamers. They are larger than regular PCs and can therefore accommodate a lot of extra hardware. Depending on your motherboard, you can plug in two graphics card, a separate sound card, a number of optical drives, and an equal number of hard disk drives into your tower PC. With a lot of hardware plugged in, tower PCs make very powerful machines.

Aside from their fast performance, tower PCs also minimize overheating issues. Because of their large size, more air can circulate within the casing. Many 3D gamers will even install fans to help keep components cool.

When scouting for a desktop PC, define your priorities. Do you want added mobility at the cost of performance, or more power but a bulky PC? If you are on a budget, a regular-sized PC is the best desktop to purchase.
